Vijayawada, Neti Patrika Prajavartha :
Recognizing the remarkable strides made by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), statutory body under the Ministry of Power, Government of India in advancing energy efficiency initiatives, several national and international organizations have invited BEE to share its success stories on a global platform.
The 4th International Conference on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), scheduled to be held in Chitrakoot, India, will feature BEE as a key participant to highlight the transformative impact of energy efficiency in the Southern states of India.
The Deendayal Research Institute, with the support of the World Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Forum, will organize this conference to discuss strategies for achieving sustainable development.
During the event, BEE’s Media Adviser (Southern States/ UTs)Wing will present the impact of communication strategies in driving the adoption of energy efficiency programs with reference to Affordable and Clean Energy under SDG particularly in proactive states such as Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, TN & Telangana.
BEE’s Global Recognition in Energy Efficiency
BEE’s energy efficiency programs have gained significant momentum in recent years, demonstrating tangible results in providing clean energy solutions, contributing to sustainable development, and addressing climate change. These achievements were recently showcased at the South Asia Clean Energy Forum 2024 in Jaipur, organized by USAID in collaboration with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL). Building on this success, the Chitrakoot(Madhya Pradesh) conference will provide a platform for BEE to share key case studies and success stories from the Southern region of India.
Spotlight on BEE’s Energy Efficiency Initiatives
BEE’s comprehensive energy efficiency strategy includes several pioneering initiatives that have set new benchmarks in the sector:
Standard & Labelling (S&L) Program: Covering 34 electrical appliances, this program has significantly reduced energy consumption by promoting the use of BEE’s Star Rated energy-efficient products.
Perform, Achieve, and Trade (PAT) Scheme: This market-based mechanism aims to reduce specific energy consumption in energy-intensive industries, contributing to significant energy savings and carbon footprint reduction.
E-Mobility in the Transport Sector: Promoting the adoption of electric vehicles to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support a cleaner transportation system.
Focus on Energy Consumption in Buildings
One of the critical areas BEE will emphasize during the conference is its efforts in optimizing energy consumption in buildings. The Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC), initiated by BEE, sets minimum energy performance standards for commercial and residential buildings. The building sector in India currently accounts for 33% of total electricity consumption and is projected to reach 55% by 2032.
Andhra Pradesh has emerged as a leader in implementing ECBC standards, having notified the code ahead of other states. The implementation has extended to over 120 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the state, with approximately 880 ECBC-compliance buildings approved to till date. BEE’s efforts have led to the adoption of three levels of energy performance standards within the ECBC framework:
1)ECBC Compliance…shall demonstrate compliance by adopting all the mandatory and prescriptive requirements or by following the provisions of the whole building performance (WBP) method, including compliance with all mandatory requirements.
2)ECBC Plus, Compliance …shall demonstrate compliance by adopting all the mandatory and prescriptive requirements or by following the provisions of WBP method including compliance with all mandatory requirements. An ECBC Plus building is 30 to 35 percent more efficient than a conventional building.
3) Super ECBC Compliance, Apart from above ECBC compliance &ECBC plus Compliance Super ECBC building is 40 to 45 percent more efficient than a conventional building.
Showcasing Southern States’ Leadership.
The conference will particularly highlight the role of Southern states such as Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana, Karnataka, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands in driving energy efficiency at the grassroots level. These states have actively implemented BEE’s guidelines, setting an example for the rest of the country in achieving SDG targets through efficient energy management. BEE’s participation in the 4th International Conference on SDGs will not only demonstrate India’s commitment to sustainable development but also offer valuable insights into scalable strategies for energy efficiency. By showcasing its impactful initiatives and communication strategies, BEE continues to position itself as a leader in the global transition towards clean and sustainable energy solutions.
