Thiruvananthapuram, Neti Patrika Prajavartha :
In a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions in India’s power sector and achieving the national Net Zero target by 2070, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, has called upon state governments and State Designated Agencies (SDAs) to adopt advanced energy efficiency strategies.
These strategies emphasize energy efficiency promotion, renewable energy adoption, and expanded use of electric power across sectors. The measures aim to revolutionize transportation, enhance energy availability, and reshape business models, driving India towards a sustainable and climate-resilient power sector.
In Kerala, A. Chandra Sekhara Reddy, Media Adviser for Southern States and Union Territories (BEE), and Hari Kumar, Director of the Energy Management Centre (EMC) Kerala, held discussions with K.R. Jyothi Lal, Additional Chief Secretary of Kerala’s Power Department. The focus was on leveraging communication strategies to enhance energy efficiency initiatives, tackle climate change, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Kerala is prioritizing energy efficiency and renewable energy to meet rising electricity demand, reduce reliance on fuel imports, and ensure environmental sustainability. According to the National Electricity Plan, energy efficiency measures could save 12-15% of projected electricity demand by 2030.
As part of its decarburization roadmap, Kerala has announced the International Energy Festival of Kerala (IEFK) 2025, scheduled for February 7–9, 2025, in Thiruvananthapuram. This event will bring together global energy experts, students, and the public to discuss innovative energy solutions, showcase energy efficiency technologies, and celebrate achievements in energy conservation.
K.R. Jyothi Lal highlighted, “Kerala is committed to becoming a leader in energy efficiency and carbon neutrality. IEFK 2025 will serve as a landmark event, uniting global energy professionals, policymakers, innovators, and investors to explore strategies for a cleaner, greener future. Key initiatives include enhancing energy efficiency, scaling renewable energy adoption, promoting electric mobility, and advancing sustainable building practices.” During the meeting Additional CS release a report on the impact of Communication Strategies for Enhancing Energy Efficiency submitted by Media Adviser BEE.
Milind Deora, Secretary of BEE, who has participated through online, praised Kerala’s proactive approach, noting the EMC’s efforts to organize IEFK 2025 as a platform for showcasing energy efficiency programs and fostering investments.
BEE Secretary Milind Deora emphasized the country’s overall energy efficiency investment potential of more than ₹10 lakh crore and encouraged southern states to devise plans to tap into this opportunity.
BEE continues to guide states like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Karnataka in South India in driving energy efficiency and sustainable development. Through collaborative efforts, India is poised to unlock significant economic and environmental benefits, setting a global example in climate action and sustainable energy solutions.
The Secretary of BEE also appreciated Kerala’s ambitious plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and 100% renewable energy by 2040. He also highlighted the Kerala GHG Inventory and the Kerala GHG Portal, created by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change (DoECC) with the Vasudha Foundation. This portal was launched by Kerala’s Chief Minister, Shri PinarayiVijayan, at a state-level event.
Sri KR Jyothi Lal noted the rapid growth of electric vehicles in Kerala and efforts to promote Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology, including built-in sensors to enable EV charging only during off-peak hours.
