Goa & Vijayawada AP, Neti patrika prajavartha :
In a decisive leap toward climate-smart governance and people-centric development, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has unveiled one of India’s most ambitious and large-scale energy efficiency initiatives in public housing, integrating high-efficiency appliances into Pradhan MantriAwasYojana (PMAY) home’s for lakhs of beneficiaries.
The initiative was formalized through a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Andhra Pradesh State Housing Corporation Limited (APSHCL), Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL)—a joint venture of Central PSUs under the Ministry of Power—and the Andhra Pradesh State Energy Efficiency Development Corporation (AP SEEDCO).
The MoU was signed at the India Energy Week (IEW) 2026 International Conference at ONGC ATI, Goa, in the presence of senior Government of India officials and global energy and sustainability experts. The agreement was exchanged between ArunBabu, MD, APSHCL, and Akhilesh Kumar Dixit, CEO, EESL, marking a defining moment in India’s sustainable housing journey.
In the first phase, Andhra Pradesh will equip 5 lakh PMAY households with energy-efficient appliances, making it the largest such public housing intervention in the country.
Each beneficiary family will receive:
4 LED bulbs, 2 LED batten lights & 2 BLDC (Brushless Direct Current) ceiling fans
This voluntary, large-scale transition ensures families move into homes that are not just affordable—but energy-smart from day one.
Global energy experts at IEW 2026 highlighted the programme as a major milestone in India’s sustainable housing ecosystem.
With BLDC fans delivering up to 70–80% energy savings and LED lighting significantly reducing power consumption, each household is expected to save approximately ₹3341.04 annually, translating into:
Lower monthly electricity bills, improved indoor comfort, Greater household energy security & Long-term reduction in statewide power demand.
Beyond households, the initiative delivers strategic benefits to the state’s power sector, including:
Reduced peak electricity demand, Lower stress on distribution networks, improved grid stability during high-summer months & optimized long-term energy planning
This aligns directly with Andhra Pradesh’s vision of building a climate-resilient, efficient, and future-ready power system.
In a special message, Ajay Jain, Special Chief Secretary, Housing Department Government of Andhra Pradesh said that under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu, Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself as a national frontrunner in embedding sustainability into mass housing infrastructure.
“Energy efficiency must reach every PMAY beneficiary. This is not just a housing programme—it is a blueprint for responsible governance, economic relief for families, and environmental leadership,” Ajay Jain said.
A pilot rollout covering 18,000 beneficiaries was launched by the Hon’ble Chief Minister on November 12 at Rayachoti, delivering:
Verified energy savings, High beneficiary satisfaction, Smooth logistics and distribution & Operational readiness for statewide expansion
The success confirms the scalability, feasibility, and long-term impact of the model.
ArunBabu, MD, APSHCL, said the initiative demonstrates how welfare housing and energy efficiency can move hand in hand.
“This programme proves that low-income households can be at the forefront of modern, low-carbon living. Andhra Pradesh is showing how state-level action can meaningfully contribute to national climate and energy goals.”
Akhilesh Kumar Dixit, CEO, EESL, hailed the programme as a defining national milestone.
“Andhra Pradesh has set a powerful benchmark. This initiative proves that sustainable housing is not an aspiration—it is an achievable reality at scale. These are homes built not just for today, but for generations to come.”
By embedding energy efficiency into the very foundation of PMAY, Andhra Pradesh is redefining public housing in India—transforming it into a platform for economic relief, climate action, and national leadership.
This is not just a housing programme.
It is India’s next big step toward a low-carbon, people-first future
