Vijayawada, Neti Patrika Prajavartha :
In a significant step towards India’s ambitious climate goals, the International Solar Alliance (ISA), a globally respected organization, has advocated an integrated approach to implementing the Mission LIFE (Lifestyle for Environment) program. Spearheaded by India, this initiative aims to inspire individuals and communities to protect and preserve the environment, aligning with India’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions by one billion tons by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General of ISA and former member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change, emphasized the need for an energy efficiency-integrated strategy to achieve these targets. He called for proactive measures and stakeholder engagement at the state level, along with widespread dissemination of energy efficiency (EE) technologies. Dr. Mathur underscored public participation as vital for the successful implementation of these programs.
As part of efforts to consult with National and Global experts on adopting of Communication Strategies to scaling Energy Efficiency initiatives, the Media Advisor (Southern States/UTs) of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, met with Dr. Mathur in Delhi. During these discussions, the Director General praised the concerted efforts of BEE, and also Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), under the Ministry of Power and Ministry of Environment & Climate Change and several Stakeholders/ States which led to significant milestones in the fiscal year 2022-23. These achievements of BEE included energy savings of 306 billion kWh of electricity and 24.68 million tons of oil equivalent (MTOE) in thermal energy, yielding substantial economic benefits.
Under the Perform, Achieve & Trade (PAT) scheme, BEE achieved national energy savings of 8.67 MTOE and reduced CO2 emissions by 31 million tons in PAT Cycle I. The success continued in Cycle II, with savings of 14.08 MTOE and a reduction of 68.43 million tons of CO2 emissions.
Several States and Pro. active States like Andhra Pradesh has made significant strides in energy efficiency. BEE has set a target of 6.68 MTOE in energy savings for Andhra Pradesh by 2030, aligning with India’s roadmap to reduce projected carbon emissions by 887 million tons. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi, India has become a global leader in energy efficiency, contributing over 50% towards global efforts to mitigate climate change, Dr.Ajay Mathur said.
He highlighted a United Nations Environment programme (UNEP) finding that if just one in eight people worldwide adopted sustainable behaviors, global carbon emissions could drop by up to 20%.
India’s leadership was further recognized at the 4th Energy Transition Working Group (ETWG) meeting during India’s G20 Presidency in Goa, which saw participation from 100 delegates from G20 member countries and international organizations.
As for as States are Concerned, many States the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu, in particular has taken decisive actions to address climate change by involving all key sectors. The chief Minister with passion on Energy Efficiency and Environmental Protection has personally reviewed the state’s energy efficiency Roadmap and tasked EESL with implementing innovative Energy Efficiency programs at scale, collaborating with National and state level organizations . As part of these efforts, the Chief Minister released a BEE’s poster on Mission LIFE, emphasizing the need for widespread awareness among the people to improve public health, economic conditions, and environmental sustainability.
It is appreciable that the AP government has also formulated an Integrated Clean Energy (ICE) policy for 2024, focusing on sustainable development through large-scale renewable energy projects. The State has been a frontrunner in implementing National programs like UJALA, the Street Lighting National Proagramme (SLNP), Agriculture Demand Side Management (AgDSM), and E-Mobility.
Dr. Mathur who has participated in key energy efficiency programs at the Global Conference in Amaravathi, in 2016-17 further appreciated Andhra Pradesh’s leadership in this crucial area of Energy Efficiency which substantially Contributes for addressing Climate Change and reducing Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions.
Acknowledging Dr. Mathur’s appreciation of the efforts of various states, particularly Telugu States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the Media Advisor, BEE shared that, in consultation with State Designated Agencies (SDAs) like APSECM, TS REDCO, Kerala Energy Management Centre, a comprehensive report on Public Participation Programs and the success stories of energy efficiency in southern states will be submitted to the BEE. This report will be shared with other regions to promote similar initiatives for the benefit of the Consumers.
To foster a culture of energy conservation, SDAs, with BEE’s financial support, have established energy efficiency clubs in educational institutions. Southern States have fully focused on engaging schools to encourage energy conservation from a young age under initiatives like “Save Energy, Save Nation, Save Earth.
