Marking a significant step towards environmental sustainability and women’s welfare the government of Andhra Pradesh has made all arrangements for the India’s one of the biggest distribution of energy-efficient induction cooktops and compatible utensils in 11,400 Anganwadi Centers (AWCs) across the state in the first phase.
The initiative, led by the Department of Women and Child Welfare, aligns with the Union Government’s Go Electric campaign and the National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP), championed by the Ministry of Power, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL).
Timed to coincide with World Environment Day, the initiative reinforces the state’s commitment to climate action and clean energy adoption. Implemented in collaboration with EESL—a joint venture of central public sector undertakings under the Ministry of Power—the large scale distribution program will be launched by Hon’ble Minister for Women, Child Welfare, and Tribal Welfare, Smt. G. Sandhya Rani, along with public representatives in Thursday ie.05thJune in Vijayawada.They will oversee the distribution of the energy-efficient induction cooktops and compatible utensils to Anganwadi Centers.
This program, Energy Efficiency in Housing and Urjaveer was earlier formally launched in Andhra Pradesh by Chief Minister Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu in the presence of Union Minister for Housing, Power, and Urban Development, Shri Manohar Lal Khattar. Both leaders expressed strong support for clean cooking technologies that reduce environmental impact and improve grassroots quality of life.
The Centre has commended Andhra Pradesh’s leadership in implementing NECP at scale. Shri Anil Malik, Secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Development & BEE, acknowledged the state’s efforts as a national model.
Energy efficiency experts after studying best practices from 12 major states, highlighted the AP-EESL partnership as exemplary in clean cooking reforms.
Plans are underway to extend this initiative to all 55,607 AWCs across Andhra Pradesh. EESL CEO Shri Vishal Kapoor along with top officers including CGM Shri Animesh Mishra are currently monitored and to oversee implementation.
Hon’ble Minister Smt. Gummidi Sandhya Rani, Secretary Smt. Surya Kumari (Department of Women and Child Welfare), and Director Shri M. Venu Gopal Reddy expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Naidu and Union Minister Khattar for their continued guidance. They also acknowledged the contributions of Chief Secretary Shri K. Vijayanand, BEE, EESL, and other State Designated Agencies for their collaborative efforts.
Benefits of Transitioning from LPG to Induction Cooking:
• Energy Efficiency: Induction cooktops are 30% more efficient than traditional LPG stoves.
• Cost Savings: Switching to 1200W induction stoves is projected to reduce recurring LPG costs, with annual savings estimated at ₹24 crore.
• Environmental Impact: Expected to avoid approximately 28,327 tons of CO₂ emissions per year.
• Safety and Health: Eliminates open flames, reducing fire hazards and improving kitchen safety.
• Better Working Conditions: Creates cooler, cleaner, and safer environments for Anganwadi workers, especially during hot summers.
This initiative under NECP is a milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s journey toward energy efficiency, women’s empowerment, and environmental stewardship. It also directly supports India’s broader climate commitments under international frameworks.
Meanwhile, the BEE has also appreciated the South Central Railway for its commendable contributions to energy efficiency. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has assured full support in scaling and replicating Andhra Pradesh’s clean cooking model across the country and encourages other states to adopt similar sustainable initiatives for long-term impact.
