Andhra Pradesh’s transformative energy efficiency initiatives have garnered global recognition as a model for sustainable development, particularly highlighted at the Chitrakoot-India Global Conference on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), held from November 22nd to 24th. The conference praised Andhra Pradesh’s ongoing efforts, Vision, and Roadmap, developed in collaboration with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), under the Ministry of Power, Government of India. These initiatives are seen as a pioneering approach to combating climate change and achieving sustainable development through actionable, scalable solutions.
Global experts commended Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s strong commitment to addressing climate change for the universal benefit through the Panchamrit Program, positioning India as a champion in the fight against climate change..while appreciating the efforts of all State governments in promoting Energy Efficiency and Mission Life the experts urged State governments at highest level to directly engage in and continuously. monitor energy efficiency programs, water and energy conservation, e-mobility, and the effective promotion of Mission LIFFE—key components in addressing climate change.
In this context, several experts in energy efficiency acknowledged the direct involvement and continuous monitoring of clean energy initiatives, including renewable energy and energy efficiency, by Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister, Sri N. Chandrababu Naidu. This leadership is why the state has become a pioneer in the field of energy efficiency.
ANDHRA PRADESH’S ENERGY EFFICIENCY MILESTONES:
The state was recognized as a “Champion and Beacon of Energy Efficiency in India” for its impactful programs, including:
1. Energy-Efficient Appliances for PMAY Beneficiaries
o Facilitated through the AP State Housing Development Corporation and Housing Department, this program provides economically weaker sections with four LED bulbs, two LED tube lights, and two BLDC fans.
o The government of Andhra Pradesh, with support from EESL, ensures enhanced energy savings, reduced electricity costs, and improved lifestyles for vulnerable communities.
2. Adoption of Electric Cooking in Anganwadis
o A proposed program introducing over 55,000 induction cookstoves for safe and efficient cooking solutions.
o Benefits include reduced LPG dependency, lower indoor air pollution, and significant health and economic advantages.
3. LED Street Lighting Across Gram Panchayats and Urban Local Bodies
o Retrofitting 100% of streetlights with LEDs, improving safety, and reducing energy consumption.
o Benefits include lower power costs, peak load reductions, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
4. UrjaVeer Program
o Monitored by APSECM and AP SEEDCO, Energy department,this program mobilizes youth and self-help groups (SHGs) to promote energy conservation and efficiency at the community level.
o Benefits include grassroots energy awareness, income generation for youth through appliance sales, and significant environmental impact.
INDIA’S LED LIGHTING SUCCESS: A CASE STUDY FROM ANDHRA PRADESH:
At the conference, experts highlighted the National LED Street Lighting Project (NSLP) by EESL, which began in Vishakhapatnam during the recovery from Cyclone HudHud in October 2014. Completed in October 2024, this initiative, executed by the Greater Vizag Municipal Corporation and EESL, achieved 50% reduction in energy consumption, attracting global attention at the BRICS conference (Britain, Russia, India, China, South Africa).
Annual cost savings of USD 4.7 million.
Inspiration for metropolitan cities across India to adopt LED retrofitting.
This project contributed significantly to Andhra Pradesh’s recognition as a leader in energy efficiency, earning the state the first rank from the World Bank for Energy Efficiency Readiness in 2016-17.
CHITRAKOOT GLOBAL CONFERENCE: A PATH FORWARD FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT:
The Chitrakoot Global Conference specifically recognized the sustained efforts of BEE, EESL, state governments, and all stakeholders in promoting sustainable development through energy efficiency. The conference set an agenda for sustainable development with a focus on affordable and clean energy.
In the context success stories, the conference proposed a three-pronged strategy for energy efficiency to combat climate change and meeting the goals of SDGs.
• Policy Innovation: Implement sector-specific policies with a mandatory 10% green budget allocation.
• Time-Bound Goals: Establish mechanisms for progress reviews to scale energy efficiency efforts.
• Community Engagement: Leverage media campaigns, including social media, to drive public participation, with a focus on youth and women.
The Ministry of Power, through BEE and EESL, was commended for its leadership. Their programs saved 81.64 billion units of electricity, reduced CO₂ emissions by 58 million tonnes, and achieved Rs. 54,323 crore in energy cost savings through the Standards and Labelling program in 2022-23.

Chandra Sekhar Reddy, Media Advisor (Southern States/UTs), BEE, delivered a presentation highlighting the achievements and communication strategies of state-designated agencies (SDAs) such as APSECM, TSREDCO, KEMC, KREDL, TNGEDCO, and others across Southern States (Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu) and UTs in the area of energy efficiency.
Vasant Pandit, Convenor of the Global Conference, thanked global and national delegates for their valuable suggestions and support to the Deendayal Research Institute, Chitrakoot, making the conference a grand success.
The Chitrakoot Global Conference, organized with the support of the World SDG Forum and NITI Aayog, concluded with a call to action for governments, industries, and citizens to collaborate in adopting energy efficiency measures.
