Hyderabad Leads South India’s Energy Drive

– Hyderabad’s Role is Critical
– Massive Potential for Savings
– TSREDCO Pledges Full Support
– A Call to Commercial Spaces
– Nationwide Focus, Local Execution

Hyderabad, Neti Patrika Prajavartha :
As India braces for unprecedented summer temperatures and a surge in power demand, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Union Ministry of Power, has intensified its energy conservation campaign—placing prominent cities and states in general and Telangana and its capital Hyderabad in particular at the forefront of a national mission to promote responsible air conditioner (AC) usage.
In a push to cut energy consumption and carbon emissions, BEE has called on citizens and commercial establishments across Hyderabad metro Politian City and major towns to maintain air conditioners at a default setting of 24°C. This initiative is part of the government’s twin objectives:
1. Promoting energy-efficient cooling to tackle rising temperatures.
2. Encouraging cost-effective AC usage to benefit both consumers and the environment.
With a population exceeding 90 lakh and a massive residential and commercial consumer base, Hyderabad has been identified as one of the key focus city in the energy-saving drive. Milind Deore, Secretary, BEE, has emphasized the need for the Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TSREDCO) State designated agency( SDA) to launch a focused awareness campaign targeting homes, offices, malls, hotels, and government buildings in the city.
“Hyderabad’s energy consumption pattern also directly impacts national power stability and climate targets,” Along with Directors Abhishek Sharma and Kamran Sheikh , Secretary BEE who has interacted with key SDAs in the first phase on the issue said that “A collective shift to 24°C AC settings could be a game-changer.”
According to BEE estimates, increasing the AC temperature setting by just 1°C can reduce electricity usage by up to 6%. If ACs are set at 24v
• Up to 20 billion units of electricity can be saved annually.
• Financial savings could touch ₹10,000 crore in the country.
• Carbon emissions could drop by 8.2 million tonnes per year.
Benefits of Setting ACs to 24°C
• Energy Efficiency: Cuts electricity use by up to 24% compared to 20°C settings.
• Cost Savings: Substantially lowers monthly power bills.
• Environmental Protection: Reduces the carbon footprint of households and businesses.
• Comfort: 24°C falls within the ideal thermal comfort zone.
• Durability: Minimizes strain on compressors, extending AC lifespan.
• Smart Usage Tips:
•Use fans with ACs to improve air circulation.
•Ensure rooms are well-insulated to retain cooling.
•Install programmable thermostats to optimize usage.
V. Aneela, Managing Director of TSREDCO, confirmed that the agency will take up this initiative on a war footing across Hyderabad and Telangana..
BEE urged AC manufacturers to set 24°C as the default factory setting for all new air conditioning units.
“If even 50% of Hyderabad’s consumers adopt this practice, we could significantly cut power demand and emissions,”
BEE has emphasized that the initiative must be aggressively implemented in high-consumption zones—hotels, IT parks, airports, shopping malls, and public offices. One AC unit running for 8–10 hours daily can emit nearly 10 kg of CO₂, making efficient usage essential for combating climate change.
Alongside Hyderabad, cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Vizag, Thiruvananthapuram, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Bhopal and Patna are also part of the focused energy efficiency campaign.
This initiative is not just about power savings—it’s a collective step toward climate action, environmental protection, and public welfare.
Hyderabad now has the opportunity to lead by example.
