Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself as a leader in sustainability and climate change mitigation by partnering with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power to implement Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP26, Mission LiFE advocates for sustainable living practices, energy efficiency, and a transition to a circular economy.
AP, Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand underscored the government’s commitment to a phased rollout of Mission LiFE, stressing the importance of global consultations to craft an effective action plan. He urged BEE and the Ministry of Power to provide financial support for MSMEs to adopt energy-efficient technologies, including investment-grade energy audits, detailed project reports, and advanced monitoring mechanisms.
During a meeting with BEE media advisor (South) A. Chandra Sekhara Reddy and APSECM CEO B.A.V. Kumar Reddy, the Chief Secretary emphasized the need to spread Mission LiFE’s message across the state. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu echoed this vision, highlighting the necessity of adopting environmentally conscious lifestyles to combat climate change. The objective of the government is to provide 24/7 power supply with global Standers to create Congenial atmosphere for attracting investments and industrial development .To achieve this task the Chief Minister emphasized the need for time bound completion of Power projects in particular Renewable and Energy Efficient projects. The Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (SECM), the State designated agency has identified key sectors for priority action: transport, industry, buildings, agriculture, and fisheries. These sectors, particularly MSMEs, present opportunities for significant energy savings, economic growth, and job creation.
Projections estimate that energy efficiency measures in these sectors could cut energy consumption by 2.85 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) in a moderate scenario and 3.88 Mtoe in an ambitious scenario by FY 2031. Correspondingly, carbon dioxide emissions could decline by 8 million tonnes (MtCO2) and 12 MtCO2, respectively.
The Chief Secretary who has released a report of Mission LIFFE submitted by Media Adviser BEE also highlighted the critical role of MSMEs in economic growth and employment. He called for focused support for the fisheries sector in West Godavari and the glass and refractory industries in East and West Godavari districts to adopt cutting-edge energy-efficient technologies.
To showcase Andhra Pradesh’s initiatives, the state plans to host a global summit on energy efficiency in collaboration with BEE, emphasizing the progress made under Mission LiFE.
Mission LiFE envisions a mass movement towards an eco-conscious lifestyle. It encourages actions like using LED lighting, public transport, electric vehicles, solar energy, and carpooling, all aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing energy efficiency.
The mission aligns with the principle “PrakritiRakshatiRakshita” (nature protects those who protect it), aiming to improve public health, living standards, and economic prosperity. It seeks to engage one billion individuals globally by 2028, with a strong focus on India’s villages and cities.
Adopting Mission LiFE is expected to stimulate local employment in renewable energy, waste management, and eco-tourism. It will also boost small businesses and startups by creating demand for eco-friendly products and services, while fostering innovation in green technologies.
Sustainable practices are projected to reduce pollution, enhance public health, and lower healthcare costs. Eco-conscious tourism will generate revenue for local communities while preserving biodiversity and natural resources.
To amplify its impact we will brief the Chief Minister and Energy Minister about energy department’s plans to host a global summit on Mission LiFE and energy efficiency, in partnership with BEE, EESL, and the Ministry of Power Its proactive initiatives aim to ensure a cleaner environment, better quality of life, and a sustainable future for generations to come.
