In alignment with the Government of India’s Go Electric campaign, the National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP) launched in Andhra Pradesh by the Chief Minister Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu in the presence of Union Minister for Housing, Power and Urban development, Government of India Shri Manohar Lal Khattar has garnered National attention.
Significantly, Shri Anil Malik, Secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, praised Andhra Pradesh’s efforts at the National Conference held in Udaipur, Rajasthan. Having studied best practices from 12 major states, Malik described the partnership between the Govt. of AP and Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. (EESL)—a joint venture under the Ministry of Power as a National role model for implementing NECP on a saturation basis.
The Women and Child Welfare Dept. of AP Govt. has taken the lead in eliminating fossil fuels from cooking at Anganwadi Centers (AWCs), and Malik stated that “all other states will have to follow suit sooner or later.”
With support from the Union Govt, the Govt.of Andhra Pradesh has initiated the adoption of energy-efficient cooking using induction stoves and compatible utensils in 11,400 AWCs in the first phase. Plans are underway to expand this initiative to all 55,607 AWCs across the state. To expedite the implementation of NECP and finalize the action plan for supplying induction stoves and utensils to Anganwadis Smt. Surya Kumari, Secretary, Women & Child Welfare Department, along with Director Venu Gopal Reddy, will meet on 7th April with a three-member technical team from EESL,New Delhi.The team includes senior executives Animesh Mishra, Nitin Bhatt, and Nikhilesh Katariya.
Benefits of Replacing LPG with Induction Cooking:
* Energy Efficiency: Induction cooking is 30% more efficient than traditional LPG methods, leading to significant energy savings.
* Financial Savings: Switching from LPG cylinders to 1200W induction cooktops will substantially reduce fuel costs at AWCs.
* Environmental Impact: Reduced reliance on LPG will cut carbon emissions, aiding India’s climate change mitigation efforts.

* Improved Working Conditions: Creates safer and more comfortable cooking environments for Anganwadi workers, especially during hot summer months.
As part of a broader study on energy efficiency initiatives across various states, Milind Deore, Secretary and Ashok Kumar, Deputy Director General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) GOI have appreciated the efforts of several State Designated Agencies (SDAs) of States especially Andhra Pradesh and SECM. SDA.
The launch of NECP marks a significant milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s journey towards sustainability and energy efficiency. These programs not only support India’s climate action commitments but also positively impact the lives of women, children, and economically disadvantaged families. The BEE has plans to showcase Andhra Pradesh’s model to encourage the adoption of energy-efficient programs across key sectors. The BEE,Ministry of Power appreciated the sustained efforts of AP Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand and Secretary Surya Kumari, Women and Child Welfare Dept. in promoting clean cooking solutions through advanced technologies.
It is commendable that by implementing NECP across all 55,607 AWCs, the Women & Child Welfare Dept. is projected to achieve annual savings of ₹24 crores and avoid approximately 28,327 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
