The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is driving the nationwide rollout of Mission LiFE, urging Southern state governments to champion a climate-conscious economy. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of fostering sustainable practices, moving away from a “use-and-throw” model.
Mission LiFE promotes mindful consumption and a circular economy, encouraging individuals to adopt climate-positive behaviors. With rising water scarcity and increasing energy demand, this initiative is crucial to India’s sustainable development. It aligns with SDG-12, advocating for economic growth that does not compromise environmental sustainability, improving energy efficiency, infrastructure, and green job creation.
Milind Deore, Secretary of BEE under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, underscored Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for Mission LiFE, which seeks to reshape environmental practices through mindful consumption and a circular economy—moving away from the prevalent “use-and-throw” model. The initiative mobilizes individuals toward climate-positive behavior while fostering an ecosystem that supports sustainable living. The BEE Secretary had also thanked the Energy department for extending cooperation in taking forward the BEE’s ambitious and revolutionary energy initiatives.
With rising water scarcity and pollution in major Indian cities and increasing energy demand driven by economic growth, the implementation of Mission LiFE is more crucial than ever. According to the BEE Secretary, Mission LiFE aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG-12), advocating lifestyles that harmonize with available resources. This includes decoupling economic growth from environmental degradation, enhancing energy efficiency, developing sustainable infrastructure, and generating green jobs for an improved quality of life.
As part of BEE’s commitment to this initiative, the Media Advisor for Southern States and Union Territories met with the Chairman, Managing Director, and Director (Distribution& Energy Efficiency) of Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TNPDC), along with the Chief of State Designated Agency (SDA), to discuss special strategies for effective implementation. In this connection the Media Adviser has emphasised the need for Three Pronged Strategy which
includes:
-Public and Private Engagement: Establishment of Energy Conservation Cells in Government bodies and organizations and nominate nodal officers to monitor the progress of Energy Efficiency and Conservation.
-Strengthening Energy Clubs in Schools: Appointing school principals as chairpersons to promote energy efficiency.
-Media Awareness Campaigns: through effective communication strategies..
Utilizing print, electronic, FM radio, and social media.
BEE aims to embed Mission LiFE into every household and ensure 80% of India’s villages and urban areas adopt sustainable practices by 2028.

Tamil Nadu has 1,633 Energy Clubs across 38 districts with 65,000 members. These clubs educate students on efficient resource use and energy conservation through activities such as:
Poster Making, Slogan Writing, Debate, Painting, Quiz, Essay, and Fancy Dress Competitions.
Energy Conservation Rallies and Awareness Campaigns.
Energy Conservation Week (December 14-20).
Plays and Exhibitions on Energy Conservation.
Role of Energy Club Coordinators
Coordinators will:
Establish and manage Energy Clubs in schools.
Train students and parents on energy conservation.
Organize annual Energy Conservation Week celebrations.
Report activities to relevant authorities and submit utilization certificates for funds used.
Energy Club Structure
Energy Mentor: Club Coordinator.
Energy General: Student leader envisioning activities.
Energy Captain: Assists coordination.
Secretary BEE has also welcomed the initiative of Tamilnadu Electricity Regulatory Commission for recommending Discoms to provide minimum Rs10 Crores to SDA for enhancing Energy Efficiency which will benifit the State and Stakeholders.
