Ushering in a new era of energy-efficient Building construction, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the aegis of Union Ministry of Power, has partnered with the Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL) and AP State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM) to construct a state-of-the-art Super ECBC building in Visakhapatnam. This landmark project, backed by a Rs. 5 crore grant from BEE, serves as a shining example of the government’s commitment to sustainable development and cutting-edge energy standards.
According to the Media Advisor (Southern States) wing of BEE. MOP, GOI, as part of promoting energy efficiency in building sector, the BEE came forward to fund for construction of super ECBC building in Andhra Pradesh. The APEPDCL spearheading this ambitious project for its training institute, has taken a significant step towards promoting sustainable infrastructure in the state. The building, initially envisioned as a G+1 structure, was later expanded to a G+2 with the unwavering support of the Andhra Pradesh Coastal Zone Management Authority (APCZMA), showcasing the project’s dedication to excellence.
Remarkable Progress and Future Potential:
Commenced in May 2023, the project has witnessed remarkable progress with three slabs completed and brickwork underway. Poised for completion within the stipulated 12-month timeframe, this Super ECBC building is set to redefine architectural paradigms, seamlessly integrating sustainability and innovation at the National level.
The value of work completed thus far amounts to Rs 4 crore. With the inclusion of an additional (2nd) floor, the face value of the agreement has escalated from Rs.10.61 crore to Rs.15.38 crore. Subsequently, a formal request was madde by EPDCL to APSECM for an additional grant of Rs.10.0 crore, supplementing the previously approved Rs.5 crore to cover the total project cost. .As per the request CMD, ,EPFCLspecial chief secretary to the Andhra Pradesh Energy Department K Vijayanand has addressed a letter to the secretary, Union Ministry of Power Pankaj Agarwal, urging the sanctioning of an additional fund of Rs.10.0 crore as a grant for the construction of the G+2 floored building in adherence to the Super ECBC 2017 norms.

The Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) offers three tiers of energy performance standards: ECBC, ECBC Plus, and Super ECBC. The Super ECBC norms, representing the pinnacle of energy efficiency, target an impressive 50% or more energy savings compared to conventional buildings. This not only fosters innovation but also creates new job opportunities within the construction industry.

. Secretary BEE Milind Deora and Director ECBC Sourab Didi have praised APEPDCL’s recognition at the 24th Regulatory & Policymakers Retreat and the IPPAI Power National Awards-2024 as a testament to Discom outstanding performance, Service Excellence and consumer awareness initiatives.
BEE further requested EPDCL to intensify efforts in advancing energy efficiency while appreciating their initiative in constructing the Super ECBC building in Visakhapatnam.
The Chairman and managing director of APEPDCL Prudhvi Tej stated that , “The construction of this Super ECBC building not only sets a precedent for energy-efficient development in Andhra Pradesh but also contributes to the broader National agenda of promoting sustainability and resilience in protecting environment.”.. He also reiterated that Chief Minister YS. Jagan Mohan Reddy, Energy Minister P. Ramachandra Reddy and Spl. CS, K. Vijayanand, Energy dept. have been emphasized the need for Discoms to focus on innovative programs in the area of Energy Efficiency which ultimately helps for sustainability of 24×7 power supply for economic development of the State.
While thanking BEE for appreciation to EPDCL CMD Prudhvi Tej said that this major achievement was possible due to the support of the State Govt, Employees and Consumers in particular.
APEPDCL’s CGM Vijaya Lalitha, has informed the CMD that the project works are progressing rapidly and are scheduled to be completed by June 2024.
